As many of you know, there's plenty inside of the 2012 Project Management Benchmark Report each year, and there's plenty in this issue, as we delve into the current nature of the project and programme management marketplace as it pertains to age. The formula is relatively simple: are there trends with certain issues that can be broken down specifically by age? You'll find it in the April issue. Professionalism? It's in there. Career level? Affirmative. Educational breakdown? We've got it. Employment status? This is the one stop shop to find out how that shakes out by age, too. We've got four areas, plus a fifth on today's blog entry, worth deeper inspection that you're sure to find interesting this month.

This month's edition of Project Management Tipoffs we take a look at Project Management Challenges. I prefer the word challenges to problems, issues and failures which seem to be words we hear a lot in relation to projects and project management. Challenge is much more positive, upbeat and the romantic in me likes to think opportunity, adventure and the 'unknown around the corner.' In this issue we launch the 2012 Project Management Benchmark Report so you can see the challenges practitioners face in yours and their chosen career. There is much to ponder in this year's report and we kick off this newsletter with some highlights. Also check out the snazzy infographic. We hear from Craig Golby from Dignitas and he should be congratulated for getting time travel into a project management newsletter. Take a look at Craig's challenges below. We also take a deeper look at the challenges the younger project management generation are facing - does the future look bright? |

This month's edition of Project Management Tipoffs celebrates our first year of being the host of the UK's Project Management Training Directory. This directory is home to some of the biggest accredited names in the Project Management training game today - Parallel Project Training, TCC Training and Consultancy, Logical Model, CUPE Projects, Capita, AFA and many more. In celebration of this first year Tipoffs hands over the issue to the trainers. In this issue we look at the new PRINCE2 Professional certification on offer from the APM Group, David Roberts of CUPE Projects ponders what this new level of P2 hierarchy could mean for your career. Paul Naybour of Parallel Project Training adds some of his thoughts about portfolio management, while Logical Model's Simon Harris tackles the pyramid of decision-making within an organisation. Dot Tudor of TCC Training offers some expertise on the realities of the iterative changes that Agile adaptees must face. Stefan Urbanski of Capita identifies the skills of managers in general, managers of projects and managers of IT, framing exactly what each party will need. And Susan Ferguson of AFA Projects wades through some of the ignored project management certifications that truly are worth a glance. |

Now that the champagne flutes have been washed and packed away, Project Management Tipoffs rings in the new year with own kind of celebrations and anticipation. And what are we anticipating? The industry trends for the New Year, of course! First things first though: Make sure the modern picture of the project management marketplace is accurate, and take part in the 2012 Project and Programme Management Census and have your say. In addition to giving you this fantastic opportunity to help shape the most trusted PPM Study on marketplace/industry tendencies, Project Management Tipoffs slips on their Nostradamus shoes this month, soliciting the highly educated guesses of some leading project management personalities. As the year 2011 comes to an end and we enter an Olympic year filled with high-profile projects on view to the world, project managers across the nation and the world brace themselves for the status of the project management marketplace. In early Febraury we'll bring you that very status with the release of the 2012 Project Management Benchmark Report, compiled from the responses of those in and around the project management world throughout the UK and worldwide to the 2012 Project and Programme Management Census. Take part in the Project Management Census today to have your say.
Additionally, Project Management Tipoffs is your career adviser this month. Our issue for December consists of nothing but questions from project managers, and answers from our wealth of project management careers consultants. Michael Hides, Nicola Caswell-Thorp, Gary Holmes, Steve Trippier, Lindsay Scott and John Thorpe all take a crack at some of the issues burning in the project management marketplace at the moment, making it an invaluable resource for project management practitioners. Here's how it all breaks down: |

In this month's podcast to accompany the Project Management Tipoffs newsletter, we review the current project management marketplace in terms of salaries and rates. This time last year we released salary data, so thought it would be a good time to get an update on that and see what's been happening in 2011. We have two articles focused on salaries and rates - the first shows where the project management marketplace is at this moment in time - have we seen any improvements, changes or areas of interest? John Thorpe takes us through the stats and details. John also brings us a new and interesting view on salaries and rates - is there a correlation between the accreditations a project professional has and their earning power? Read on for this new insight. Finally we bring news of the PPM Census 2012 which will be distributed to project management professionals nationwide in the next few weeks. If you want to be informed about the project management marketplace heading into 2012 we urge you to take part next month. Tipoffs is presented by CUPE Projects. CUPE Projects offer a wealth of training opportunities in many PPM accreditations, including PRINCE2, MoR, MSP, ITIL, and APMP, and PMP, as well as other qualifications like Management of Value, Earned Value Management and a P3M3 Audit & Assurance Workshop. CUPE Projects’ David Roberts offers a piece on our blog, How to Manage a Camel, on the emergence of Management of Value in the PPM toolkit, so check that out. And be sure to also check out our wealth of training companies like QA Training, CUPE Projects and a host of other certified training companies in the Arras People Project Management Training Directory. Newcomers to the Arras People website can easily find the Training Directory tab in the top right-hand side of any Arras webpage. |

Agile project management? Or is it agile project management? Method or philosophy? SCRUM or DSDM Atern? And can someone tell me which one the APM Group's certification is tailored after? These are some of the questions we've been asking about Agile from the project management community. There's plenty of confusion about what Agile means to practitioners in project management - just take a look yourself by performing a Google search! We got really interested in March 2011 when the UK Government launched its new ICT strategy mandating all projects become smaller in scope and more Agile in method. Was it just a new buzzword for government project departments? Can the PRINCE2 ingrained ways of the ICT personnel translate easily to an Agile way? And again - which kind of Agile method is the Cabinet Office talking about, anyway? We've enlisted the help of the Agile guru Keith Richards, who lays out for project managers what Agile can do, what it can't do, and also tackle that "method or philosophy" question. Our next author is Arras' John Thorpe, who tackles that same question and also applies the emergency brake to what sometimes feels like a runaway train bound for widespread Agile adoption without a true understanding of what we're getting ourselves into. Finally, Dan Strayer talked to Agile's advocates (agilistas and PMs), sorting through the benefits Agile can bring to certain projects while also getting a better appreciation for how Agile PM can be applied improperly. We also take a look at the professional bodies response to Agile and project management with courses and accreditations. |

In the lead up to this month's newsletter focused on higher education in project management, we've touched off debates & healthy discussions, tapping into educated opinion throughout the project management community. All of it revolves around one emerging area within project management – project management degrees. Tying in with our newest portal, the Higher Education Directory, we've collected viewpoints from the Arras People LinkedIn Group page; responses from our poll at Survey Monkey; and viewpoints at the Association for Project Management discussion we've originated. It's all in the name of giving project management practitioners, job seekers, students, educators and hiring personnel alike the ability to provide input and feeling for what degrees in project management mean for the marketplace. We'll interpret our discoveries of what you've told us, and determine what project management courses in the UK's universities will mean to the profession as a whole. We're also back with another edition of Question of the Month, and we gear our readers toward one of our Frequently Asked Questions. In our other running feature, Lindsay Scott again reviews a new book: this time, she tackles Peter Parkes' NLP for Project Managers, with an accompanying announcement of a planned course Parkes will deliver in November. A 10% discount on the course is available to Tipoffs readers - visit www.NLP4PM.com with the code "Arras" to learn more about the course itself and what it can bring to you.

The month of August for Project Management Tipoffs means the poolside on holiday, the kids playing on the deck, and meandering thoughts about your career. It happens, believe me. But how do you turn these idle thoughts into something productive that can lead to some distingushing revelations about effective job searching when you return? For matters such as these and also tying in our new Careers Advice page, How to Differentiate Yourself in the PM Marketplace, we explore ways to turn those thoughts into a productive process that lands the role you've always wanted but may not have known existed. Our next piece targets some data revealed in the Differentiate Yourself pages, and expands upon these revelations by advising according to the trends and facts within the current PPM marketplace. The information is fresh from a presentation given by our own Lindsay Scott in June of the same title, and our ultimate aim is to give you some tips as to the right way to self-market and pursue a good image for the branding of "you: the ultimate PPM candidate!" Guest contributor Birgit Oberlerchner tells us how she approaches a job offer these days in the midst of a groundswell of movement against immediate acceptance of a job offer. We're also back with another edition of Question of the Month, a reference to one of our series of Frequently Asked Questions, and Scott takes a look at Denise Taylor's Now You've Been Shortlisted: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Being Successful at Interviews and Assessment Centres, with one lucky reader able to get their hands on a free copy! Nicola Caswell-Thorp also ponders a question from a candidate about serial applying and the unwanted scrutiny such practises bring. |

The theme for the Arras People Podcast this month is stakeholders and the politics of project management: these are the unavoidable office politics and that necessary stakeholder management that can bog down a project before it ever really gets a flow going has garnered our attention. You can't run from it, either: stakeholder engagement is about communicating the project's end products, uses and ultimate affect on those who will feel either the brunt of it or the necessity of it (dependent on their perspective). Here are the tips you can glean from this month's podcast to use going forward:

Developing your career prospects in project management is no longer the sole domain of higher learning classes, seminars and trade shows. As the evolution of podcasts, webinars and micro-blogging sites like Twitter have proved in recent years, there is always some other tool in the pipeline that can propel your possibilities. This month, career development is the goal of Tipoffs, and we've tapped some of the leaders on our own Project Management Training Directory - as well as one of our directors, and the editor-in-chief - to delve into CPD and you. You'll learn about the wealth of opportunity that sits before you these days, including:
For this month's edition of Project Management Tipoffs, just as in February, we've handed some of the editorial content over to the trainers who've jumped on board in full-embrace of the goals of the Training Directory - renowned names like Real World Training, The Learning People, Logical Model, ChangeQuest, and RADTAC. |

The Tipoffs podcast is moving on up in the world, because now we've added music. Original compositions from Mike Thorpe will now accompany future podcasts, premiering this month as we delve into project management issues within both the public and private sectors. Firstly we have a piece that explores the Benchmark Survey as it tackles both sides of the public/private coin, getting a feel for just what the market thought heading into 2011. We then hit the refresh button, going back into the market to get a project man on the street perspective as to the strengths, weaknesses, tendencies and trends going through each sector. Project management hiring issues regarding specialism emphasis concern the asker of our Question of the Month, and guest reviewer Elizabeth Harrin takes a look at Emanuel Camilleri's Project Success. |

This month we have decided to look at some of the workplace challenges faced by the project management community by taking data from the Arras People Project Management Benchmark Survey and also the results of a discussion we recently hosted over on LinkedIn. Firstly we have a piece that looks at how age impacts the project management practitioners, in terms of outlook and opportunities in the workplace. Is ageism an easy call or is there more that older practitioners can do to open up new opportunities for themselves? We then take on the ever present question of gender and the imbalances reported by practitioners in the project management community. Again we ask if there is real discrimination based upon gender, or is it actually for many caught up in a broader set of circumstances? We then move on to discrimination in the workplace and share the responses from a recent LinkedIn discussion where we invited practitioners from around the world to share with us their personal experiences, both good and bad. The discussion is a real eye opener and we would still welcome further input from the wider community. Project management issues for hiring and workplace effectiveness tackle the person asking our Question of the Month, and we also take a look at Professor Knut Samset's Early Project Appraisal, through the lens of guest book reviewer John Greenwood. For March 2011, Project Management Tipoffs from Arras People is back in our trusted format after a one-month absence. This time around, we wanted to delve into the detail of the successful project manager. Naturally, we've gone to those who know about what things can enhance the probability of a successful project manager, and we'll even talk to two specific people about their specific views on the matter.
Lindsay Scott is tireless for us this month as a contributor, first interviews the venerable Keith Baxter, the risk management guru, author and Managing Director/Founder of De-RISK. Meanwhile, editor Dan Strayer hits the left side of the Atlantic to speak with Derek Huether PMP, the well-known Critical Path blogger, as we tackle his thoughts on that which a successful project manager has developed. We've asked for your help on the matter as well, but go to the link below to read your fascinating take on project management. Project management learning and development is so much more than taking a technical based project management training course once in a blue moon. From the enquiries we have received over the years, it is obvious that many project management professionals do take their development seriously but sometimes just need a little advice or guidance on what is best for the next steps in their careers. Arras launched its own Training Directory earlier this month aimed at;
